Two Crickets Chatting
Tobias and Matthias
Were born as crickets
They loved watching the setting sun
As a warm summer’s day drew to a close
In the peaceful silence
They chatted to one another
‘I created the Universe,’ said Tobias
‘It wasn’t easy, but I managed it
So now, dear Matthias
You've got the ability to perceive
Everything I've done’ ‘Why on earth did you create
Torrential rains, dear Tobias?
What was the idea behind it?’ ‘It was my,
So to speak, philosophical concept, dear Matthias,
A metaphor for the difficulties of existence, and at the same time
An incentive for those like us, vulnerable creatures
To quickly find shelter – on the other hand
Some trees needed precisely torrential rain
As their roots lacked moisture
So I had to accept their arguments
But what exactly is the problem, dear Matthias?
Last time we took perfect shelter
Behind a pile of planks dumped in the back garden
Of those two-legged creatures that make funny noises
For a good laugh of our children’
‘You’re right, dear Tobias, sometimes
I simply fall into an inexplicable melancholy
Perhaps, before your Universe
There was another one, and I still hold onto
Fragments of memories of it’
‘Yes, most likely,’ replied Tobias
‘But how is it, dear Matthias, that you manage to perceive the world
With such acuity? Who knows what came before us!’
‘I don’t know what to say, dear Tobias!
Let’s sing our favourite elegiac song
‘I married a cicada last night
and like a fool got drunk,
while the cicada got high
on a hooker stuffed with junk’
‘A brilliant idea, dear Matthias!’
And the crickets chirped until the sun went down.
