Two
Two material things that cemented a friend ship
One a boat that started out as a ten foot aluminum skiff
Morphed six times into an eighteen foot cuddy cabin hull
And two an eight foot pool table that was re covered once
His idea of boat use was to dig sea worms, and clams.
Use the worms to catch flounder and skate
Fillet the flounder then use the racks and skate to bait
Ten lobster traps.
We ate flounder and lobster.
There was one old lady we stopped at on the way home
To drop off a couple of fish.
She used to pay but after a while it was too hard to take the money
Probably for the same reason a lucky shot or an unplanned kiss
Made either one of us spot the ball
Rules? The code we lived by taught our kids how to live
He never allowed me to pay for anything
I brought food and his kind of beer
We lagged for break once and after that the loser racked
We cleaned the fish before we shot any pool
He told me once There is no joy in owning a boat without a friend
The lobster paid his family dental bills
The pool table created two better than average sharks
We lived four towns apart
Now they live in Florida
We could be closer
Maybe
