Tragedy Is More Enjoyable Than Comedy

I consulted myself and we’ve agreed
That no more sadness do we need.
I’ve had my full share of tragedy.
Please Lord, have some mercy on me.

Before I check a touted book out,
I riffle pages, see what it’s about.
I put it back if sadness I see,
Please Lord, have some mercy on me.

I tell myself it’s only a tale
It shouldn’t hurt to hear them wail,
But I’d rather read of hilarity,
Please Lord, have some mercy on me.

I feel every pain the hero feels,
I even stop to share his meals.
Don’t let him die in agony,
Please Lord, have some mercy on me.

Give me a book that makes me laugh.
I haven’t laughed enough by half.
I don’t want to read a tragedy,
Please Lord, have some mercy on me.

I read many more plays than I see peerformed, Joyce. I was a speech and drama major in college. With novels, though, I prefer a happy ending. You're correct in what you said about viewing plays in the third person and seeing things happening to other people. I am more inclined to associate with characters in novels than in plays. Thanks for your comments. Love, Carolyn

I admire your honesty, Joyce, in your antithesis to Dr. Ram's premise. The reason I have held so many limerick contests is because I love to laugh. I don't take the limericks seriously as life brings us so much tragedy. Still, when I visit Broadway, I am more inclined to enjoy a drama over a comedy. It has something to do with the lasting impact they have. Always a great read from you, dear. Love, Carolyn
