"Teach us to care and not to care; teach us to sit still." -T.S. Eliot Too much of everything, no equanimity, ipods and emails engulfing your brain; snafus and bottlenecks, traffic and tie-ups, endless confusion will drive you insane. Perhaps it would be best to pause for a moment, to give up your place to the lean and the mean, to covet silence and calm and simplicity, shun chaos and pressure, it's just not your scene. Take refuge in reading, or simply go shopping, have fun with your children and make lots of noise, play ball with your neighbor, take walks in the country and nurture your inner child, play with your toys!

Wow! This is an enchanting write. People have become mechanical toys pursuing useless activities. The poem paints a graphic picture of the rat race we are engaged in. The suggested refuge is commendable. Thanks also for your encouraging comments on my Haiku House of Glass. Happy New Year. -Mohammad

So true and beautifully written. Great to see 'snafu' in a poem (grin). Thank you for all your kind comments and support in 2008. Wishing you a Happy New Year and hoping all your special dreams will come true in 2009! Nigel

I like this Keith. The philosophy is well expressed and there is a jaunty feel to this. it is very lyrical, one could easily imagine a guitar accompaniment to this. 'Take refuge in reading, or simply go shopping' is a suprising line and seems to break with the whole argument of the poem (in that shopping is an 'adult' thing). However it fits in well with thy slyish humour of the poem.

So true the words you have penned here. I agree that there are far too many things that distract us from the beauty all around us. Although, I do like my mp3! Happy New Year, Keith, and God bless you always! Love, Robin

This should be a guide to parenting, Keith. The 'inner child' is one that should never grow up and leave home. How lonely and boring it would be without it around. Our neighbours were out running after each other today. Made me happy, I was SURE they were playing.:) Then the man went off screeching in his car and bunted a dog on the street. Oh man, don't think I wanna 'play ball with (that) neighbor'.:( Anyhow..Happy New Year..best to you and yours!! Blessing to you..Love Mikki:)

I really loved the message of this poem. The first stanza is packed full of activity, such chaos. Seems weird how we make life more complicated, especially since these things are meant to make life easier! I love the line "ipods and emails engulfing your brain". Thank you for your kind comments on my poems this year, Keith! I hope to write more in '09 and I'm sure I'll enjoy reading more work from you also :D Have a good new year! As the Deutsch say, Prosit Neujahr! Nathaniel

YES YES YES! I LOVE that quote by Sir Eliot, and could not agree more. Him and Thoreau had it right - less is more. This is why we live in the middle of nowhere, with no ipods; cell phones, or fancy gagets, just reality. :) Love, Kristin
