Too Big Too Fail
You were essential to all those creatures
Who relied on you
You provided a stable home in the cold months
And a warm refuge during the rainy season
Many looked over you but you never looked down on them
Many thought that you would always be there
You saw many dwellers come and go over the years
Both humans and animals and other things
But you stood tall and silence
Like the majestic spirit that you were
Not exactly a redwood but a gentle giant to me
Those you would salute with a morning hello
and those who would send you a small thank you during a heatwave
And prayed that you survived another major storm
But that last derecho broke every bone in your body
and when you fell from your lofty heights
you still save our cars and homes and us from bodily harm
We are the ones that you will miss you
And when the mechanical tree removers
Will see you as profit or the owners of the apartment building
A damn inconvenience
We are the ones that will miss you
When there is a gaping hole in the ground
And your physical presence will be chopped up for furniture
To be sold at Macy’s
We are the ones that will feel you spirit
And when a strong wind blows again
We will know that you are essentially free
