To Holocaust Survivors In the Former Soviet Union

You worked so hard but just exist.
Your high school grad dates you just missed,
evacuated from Ukraine.

In Russia’s army to resist,
you fought the tyrant Hitler’s reign.
You worked so hard but just exist

on meager pensions. You subsist
by choosing food or meds, that’s plain.
No other kinfolks to assist

in taking care of you in midst
of tears and shakes of flashback strain,
you worked so hard but just exist!

Although you made your job’s A-list,
you now wear rags, your joints in pain,
no other kinfolks to assist.

Your teeth all gone, in life’s mean twist,
these lines remain your grim refrain:
You worked so hard but just exist,
no other kinfolks to assist.

It's a real disgrace how they are treated; all they've been through and they are still treated this way. There is no excuse; well penned and very sad.

Your poem brilliantly conveys the suffering and pathos of survivors of the Holocaust. I have never visited Russia to witness how these people live now. But this poem brings it to life. Especially remarkable is the way this poem conveys how the suffering of these victims is nearly as bad now as it was when they were imprisoned in the camps by the Nazis. They can never escape the horror of their past. They are reminded of it daily. I am very moved by this poem.

Hello Thomas! Thank you for taking the time to read this and respond in the detailed way that you did. It let me know the poem conveyed what I wanted it to. I’ve never gone to Russia either or met any of these people but I would sure like to. Their stories are inspiring because they keep their faith despite all they’ve been through. Anyway, keep writing the great stuff you write!

WoW Jennifer. I was one of the ones who were blessed to actually meet and shake the hand of Corrie Ten Boom. She spoke of her suffering and the suffering of others at the hands of Hitler's army. My heart and prayers go out to those who still remember those times. A fine tribute and plea for help for them. God Bless, JB

My husband sent money to this organization for about a year but it was stopped by the credit card company which said that the money was going to some militant group like the Taliban so you need to really check out this organization to be sure your money is going where you want it to. Your visit to my page was encouraging. Sara

Oh my gosh Sara! This was a shock! Before I made my first contribution to them, I researched them on Charity Navigator and Charity Watch, and and no red flags like that came up. I looked them up again after this message from you and still nothing. What extremist group did they give to? When was this? Soup Mail me with any other info, please. God bless!
