To a Former Lover

Unlike you, I will not renounce
the passion of my youth,
now I am old and the fire burns low....

I do regret my sins, mostly of omission:
failing to tell of love, and sharing of love.

The women I've known could fill a ballroom.
Glad I am I danced with each in turn, yet
I wish I had held her tighter, lifted her higher,
giving joy to get joy....

If only I could love each of my loves again--
playing with her toes, caressing her calves,
sliding my hands along her tense, waiting thighs.
Then kissing the nape of her neck
while bathing in her hair and finally,
finally seeing the smile behind her eyes.

CONGRATS ON YOUR FINE WIN. This fine piece brought back treasured memories for me. Of youth, life adventures and loves. "Then kissing the nape of her neck while bathing in her hair. and finally, finally seeing the smile behind her eyes." Golden verses as the great ending..

Thank you Robert-- it may sound corny, but I've always thought it a bit of magic when one soul can reach across time and space to another.

Thanks Jan-- and yes, if we knew when young what time would bring, we would savor our youth....

Between the lines, are the passions and memories that we all can recall. In our mind's eye, we are still those passionate young people....and too often it is hard to wrap our heads around the passing years, and that face in the mirror. I liked this poem very much ! Congratulations, Len!

Thank you, Becca-- the young man who yet dwells within this old man's body does wish he could have been more appreciative of the unbounded generous nature of women, who, as a philosopher once said, make life worth living.
