Time Was

He looked at the old man with tobacco stains on his shirt Then asked if times were different when he was a kid The old man smiled and said I’ll tell you a story About the times we had and the things we did. Time was when we pledged our allegiance Being patriotic didn’t make you a fool Time was when you respected your elders Each day God was in our public school We had Friday night dances in the old gym And pep rallies before the big game A Ford was a Ford and a Chevy a Chevy No two cars ever looked the same We traveled around pedaling a bike On the handlebars our glove we would drape With eight or nine kids a game we would play And our baseball was covered with electrical tape We walked home after dark alone without fear Sometimes we would go to the park Ride the swings and merry go round, even climb trees Carve our initials into the bark Time was we had moral standards on TV They played the National Anthem when day was done Time was neighbors cared about each other And a back porch gathering was a lot of fun We decorated our cars in school colors before a game We’d work on it until the sun went down Then go to the game with carload of friends If we won, we’d beep our horns all over town Time was when we shopped downtown We knew all the owners by name Time was when the music was clean And a smile could start a new flame. So yes it was different, was it better or worse They are the times I often dream of I don’t know if they were a blessing or curse Time was we were surrounded by love.

vince I didn't realize how much you have written. You have enough here for a novel of Poetry. I thought a name for your book just a thought. Going Down Memory Lane. You have a certain ability to take us back better then anyone I have read. I think it is your passion and love I can't imagine the memorabilia you have in your home from baseball cards to car model's. You strike me as the kind of gentleman that would have all those goodies. I can't waite to get started on your poem's. Michael Torres

Vince I am amazed at this beautiful thought provoking write of your's with those special memories you so dearly hang on to. I envy you, for being in that glorious time frame in America's. Past. Remind's me of that song. Those were the day's my friend, I thought they never end... Neil Diamond was one of my favorites growing up. You mention good music. Vince It might take me a while but I will read everyone of your poem's. They always touch my heart with emotion and I bet you can tell a story.

this was another great piece you did. today all the cars do look the same, back then i could name every car and the year. And you could say God in school, it was no big deal. the pep rallys were great, plus we got out of class those were great days.

Hello Vince, this brings back such good memories, do you remember when some of the TV stations would go off the air at midnight, and that jet plane would go toward the sky,and the last words the man would say was, "higher and higher until they touch the face of God" I would stay up almost every night just to hear those words, great poem, Oma

I think I caught the tale end of those times as a child of the 70's. I wish I could have lived in the times of which you write as a teen, now a days it's scary to think of my kids out there in this crazy, fast-paced world...no time to stop and smell the roses. Very sad. :(

Hi Vince I love the sentiments in this beautiful poem. I know what you mean, it's like the end of an era that we remember with fondness and wish were still alive today. Everyday the void seems to get a little bigger. Truly enjoyed. Love Light Truth Patricia
