Time

Time

     When, impatient Time, were you e'ere my friend
     And set your perfect pace to my frail stride?
     Or allowed my will, your will to bend
     Or our purposes to coincide?
     Do you measure the flowing years,
     When you hold eternity in your clasp?
     A man's short life does wax and wane
     And infinity escapes my weak grasp.
     Do you conspire with ambivalent Fate
     Or maybe play with playful Chance?
     Or by soft visioned dreams of Destiny
     Do captivate, ourselves to entrance.
     So that we, by swelled ambition lead;
     By Vanity, are voluntarily misled.
