Notes About The Poem

This Is Who I Am

I am... a lamb of the Good Shepherd; seeking to love and follow him more faithfully the husband of my college sweetheart; with her, I hold a winning lottery ticket a family man; seeking to make my clan a place to thrive, a safe haven for all a hard worker; seeking to pour heart, soul, strength and mind into each task an empathetic friend; seeking to acknowledge pain and help you find your way a waistwatcher; seeking that enigmatic perfect ratio of flavor to calorie count an aficionado of nature's beauty; seeking moon rises, waterfalls, and sunsets a trail maven; seeking to conquer unattained summits and enjoy unseen vistas a pedal pusher; seeking to luxuriate in the great outdoors by cycling through it a careful arranger of words; seeking to write poetry qualifying as transcendent a student of the arts; seeking to divine their secrets and know myself better a creator of music; seeking to be a blessing, mindful of those far more talented a lover of humor; seeking to laugh at myself, and 'dish' with a wink and smile a player of games; seeking camaraderie over a win, fellowship over high score a solver of puzzles; seeking to use math and science to comprehend my world a connoisseur of the fine wine of baseball; seeking that elusive championship a perceiver; seeking to heal with a compassionate ear and encouraging word ..... I am blessed and grateful to be alive and loved by such wonderful people I am a zoo of many animals; come by some time and find one you like!

I have been wondering why I hadn't read this earlier but now I think it is better I read it after witnessing a few traits of yours mentioned here. I think I now know the empathetic friend, the hard worker, the admirer of words, beauty, nature, poetry, music and faith. Yet, I wish to witness more of my dear friend. God bless you. I must say I am honoured to know you as a close friend here. Congratulations on your win :)

I love your concluding lines, John! 'a zoo of animals' - what a perfect metaphor:) You are certainly a connoisseur of creativity in so many forms beyond poetry - I especially like how you call your wife 'the winning lottery ticket'! Also the line about solving puzzles with math and science makes me think of my husband, he is exactly like that too! Very enjoyable read!

Wonderful John - I know different screen display differently. Mine showed each line with one 'extra' word onto a second line and it makes a most interesting effect ~ you may want to cash in on that (only one line ends with 'it' tht could easily be changed for nature or some other word). May you always "seek to conquer unattained summits". Bravo. A delight to read.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment, Line. I am grateful to you, Andrea, Sam, Dear Heart, and Eve for laying groundwork for other poets to tell their life story in the poetry. As far as the layout, it seems each display shows it differently, alas. I discovered that when doing a shape poem, that looks nothing like the shape when viewed on a mobile device. ~ John

it's wonderful to read your description of yourself, john! none of it surprises me, although there are definitely things here i did not know about you. so much of you (maybe all of us?) comes out in the writing. ~ by the way, which baseball team?

Being a San Diegan, I'm a lifelong fan of the Padres... alas no championship still - hope springs eternal. Thank you for reading with such kind eyes, Ilene. You're right about the writing; eventually our autobiography gets written, piece by piece, story by story.

Thank you kindly, sir. It still amazes me that people want to read things like this... I guess it's the introvert in me that always seems surprised when others are interested. I'm grateful to Andrea for this contest, and Sam who set the template for it, helping me break out of my shell. Appreciate the comment. ~ John
