They Say He's a Loser

They say he’s a loser. What do THEY know?
The snobs he works for know nothing at all.
He’s common and some people think he’s slow.
Dyslexia put around him a wall.
The teachers felt kids slow to read were dumb.
But he could fix things, and wow, he could sing!
Did anyone offer him even one crumb
of opportunity for anything?

He works outside and comes home to a wife
gritty, but feeling that he’s doing fine!
His wife, job, small house and kids are his life.
The wealthy on the hill don’t even shine!
They drink or pop pills for their void to kill.
The “Loser” has hours of sweetness to fill.

WoW! Andrea, I really enjoyed your take on the contest theme. Although he appeared like a loser by the uppity folk uninformed he was not a loser at all. He had a learning disability( I can relate to that). Folk judge what they see on the outside. To me, this is a winner contest or no contest. Best wishes in the contest. Have a great day and weekend:-) Alexis

Hi Andrea, I'm not sure if this person is some one you actually know or you wrote it for the contest? Either way, it not only shares the struggles of people with learning disabilities but also the fact that all of us have "special needs", some just more visible than others. Enjoyed..

Outstranding. All humans have faults and weaknesses. And strengths We all have shortcomings, too!and we know it. But..we play white hat vs black hat. Of course, we never tell on ourselves. It’s the story of blame…very sad. Human beings can be kind or mean. Poor does not mean virtue, nor rich. Gratitude makes a human with a spine. These overcome. Winners are never victims Pangie

A wonderful sonnet Andrea, I say the losers are those on the hill, wealthy yet having to live dependent on a pill. All the best for the contest. Belle

Those learning handicaps are very hard on children. There are so many and most of the time teachers don't catch the problem/s so they are not diagnosed, therefore, don't get special attention to help the person lead a better life. Sad. Thanks for sharing this topic with us. Reads like a good contender to me for the contest. Way to go. Some students are helped by using colored plastic overlays that helps the student read. Sara

Good entry for the contest Andrea, some may lack certain skills but shine in other areas. Good luck in the contest. Tom
