They Awaken
Removed from history,
Relinguished to fantasy and dreams.
In their wisdom, they did hide,
waiting till the time is right.
Tales are told of them,
the Ancients of Ancients.
Rulers of the winds.
The wizards they did serve.
Of the magic and their power.
Myths that surround them,
religions that hold them high.
Tattooed on the skin of man,
carved as golden idols.
Those of iridescent scales,
playing within high clouds.
Coming down to earth
to serve and protect humans.
Wisdom of the ages held.
Of those that were black as soot.
With horns to gut, claws to shred.
Born into darkness,
Hells fire from its mouth.
Brought forth to conquer and kill.
The knights that became slayers.
Heroes for coin of the realm
and ladies favors.
Lands were bestowed on the brave.
Or death by flame and talon.
They awaken now.
Again to fly with the sun.
Their long sleep ended.
Sinuous beauty of demon?
With an eye towards the sky,
your ears strain to hear the sound
of leathery wings.
Both awe and fear grip your mind,
when the Dragons take to the sky.
