Part of the western approach to Newburgh-Beacon Bridge where my childhood home used to be.

There Is A View There is a view that haunts me so and breaks my heart each time I pass. Although it happened long ago, strong memories of past amass. This sacred place I can't erase. My childhood home stood there, I know; our 'castle' on a hill of grass. For a new bridge, torn down with woe, our home we lost; State won, alas. With grief, I sigh when I ride by. Sandra M. Haight ~1st Place~ Contest: Rhyme Me A Posie Sponsor: Broken Wings Judged: 03/11/2018 Note: The Newburgh-Beacon Bridge was completed and opened in November 1963, after New York State, claimed our home via eminent domain. Since I live close by, I constantly have to pass the site where my childhood home stood.

Yes, Connie, I have written a couple of other poems. I think I am always reminded because I have to pass the location often. Thank you so much for your kind comment and congrats. Hugs, Sandra

Progress Phooey! But tis true, we can really never go home again even if the house is still standing under new ownership. Nice take on the prompt. Congrats.

Sandra congratulations on your win in my contest with this emotional write. When I was a child the same thing happened to me. There is a university where our home and others were.

Thank you, Constance, for another fine contest, as they all are. I appreciate my nice placement and I do remember you telling me about your similar experience. The feeling of loss never seems to go away, especially, in my case, having to pass the location often. Thanks again, Hugs, Sandra

Oh my God do I feel this! As an army brat who has visited many past 'homes' to see them altered, changed and be hit by an unimaginable pain in reaction - well, it is something I relate to, live with and bear as part of who I am. This is a topic your talented pen could have expounded upon, I know, but still relayed in this format, after all, it hit my hard. All the best ... CayCay

The same for my grandparents home, finding that it was in the way of something the city wanted built, here in Michigan. Though Eminent Domain wasn't possible, they certainly didn't take long looking for a way to condemn the site so the city could claim it. Gut wrenching, I feel your haunt.
