The Victim - Through Their Eyes 2

You stood in the dock when the guilty verdict was read out … Just a spotty youth with a cocky look in your eyes Now sentenced to five years in prison, I hope you rot in hell! The defence team tried to make out that YOU were the victim You had drug and alcohol issues, which catapulted you into a life of crime I had to sit there and hear about your past Was I supposed to feel sorry for you? What about me, the real victim… You’d entered my house, hell bent on stealing what little I had I handed over my widow's pension but you weren’t satisfied Demanding more, you began shouting obscenities at me You started trashing my house trying to find my jewellery High on drugs - you were like a wild animal Your fists rained down like bullets … you beat me senseless My daughter found me unconscious, lying in a pool of blood I spent weeks in hospital Now I’m terrified of being on my own and have moved in with my daughter I couldn’t go back into the house I so loved You will be out of prison in a few years… I have a life sentence Through their eyes 2 – Sponsored by Shadow Hamilton 08~12~16

Great poem and we so hate those who denude us of everything in one simple action of greed...those robbers! I remember coming back home with a gold chain to gift my toddler for his birthday and I was attacked by a thief who took away my bag!....Well Congrats. Sunita

So true, Jan, so many crimes present a life sentence on the victims. Great write!

Thanks Kai - makes me so angry to think the victim has to live with the trauma forever yet the culprit gets out after a few years... probably straight out to offend again:-( hugs Jan xx

Hi Jan, well you have written an excellent piece, because as i read i could feel the anger rising inside me. You made this write raw and real and if i had got my hands on the cocky little git, HELL TO PAY, and then i realised, it isn't real you dipstick. You really can't take me anywhere Jan, not if you want to go back. I would say this should do well but what i say doesn't mean anything when it is a contest. It is better to say i wish you well with this write Jan. A 7 and fav. Hugs....Mike. XX

I couldn't motivate myself to write for the last contest which was about committing murder, but I was happier to write for this one - makes my blood boil when you see these lowlifes in the dock smiling knowing they will be out in a short time:-( hugs jan xx

Goodness Jan. You cut straight to the core with this beautiful write. Nice to see you getting jiggy with the free verse too. Very well done

Yet you still managed to keep it very concise and to the point. Very impressive. The 3 times I've tried free verse I always end up turning everyone into a robotic spider during a ramble so I gave up on it. For humanity's sake

Thanks Phillip - I love the freedom of free verse - no syllable restrictions or rhyme:-) hugs jan xx

Oh dear....this is a riveting write, Jan. One can only imagine the pain...the fear...the hopelessness. The life sentence is truly the victim's lot to bear. Great write. Hugs from Cyprus.

Thanks Mike - All too often the perpetrator gets out early on parole and sadly the victim can have a life sentence after the trauma of the crime:-( hugs Jan xx

A great piece on the victim's point of view which is unfortunately often not thought of yet the lasting effects are devastating. The last line is a powerful one that perfectly portrays the emotions you have vividly penned. Terrific writing, my best to you for the contest:-) bundles of blessings, lynn

Thanks Lynn.. I've seen pictures in the press of elderly people being beaten up for a few pounds and the effect on their lives is so devastating:-( hugs Jan xx

Hi Jan, This is a good take on the contest theme. You let the reader see into the mind of victim. I agree, when a aweful thing like this happens the victim is never actually free. Great job. I wish you the best of luck in the contest. A Big seven: -) Alexis
