Notes About The Poem

Listen to poem:

The Trained Refuge

The long guns trained upon my fragile refuge,
yet still to find forgiveness in contrite cadence' known.
Will you discover the dream has died-
in defiance of a love so giving...
to find the day's child-like grasp,
of world and wonder worth living.

Kai, Thank you for that comment. And I hope your Christmas was full of...guns. Kidding, full of L--O-V-E. Nat King Cole said it so well: https://youtu.be/f_HmF84G7ZY

Those guns have no real effect on one who lives in hope and love, Richard! Your striking poem is a delight to read. Regards // paul

Hard when love is defied to find the wonders of living again...but time, they say...heals. Intriguing piece, Richard ~

Hello, Thank you for your healing comment. This message is a thin-veiled attempt at apologies for failing to say 'I love you', 'I'm proud of you'. Trespasses and transgressions never meant. -Richard

Vegter, Thank you for mentioning this. It gets its hooks in you, Soleado (Sunny). Perhaps angels landed on Earth to record it back in 1974. -Richard

we live in a cruel world where some suffer in silence, whilst other increase the suffering, and some remain clueless.. it is always important to forgive and move on.. but can be difficult.

Silent One, Thanks for the comment, and wisdom. It is difficult...trying not to step on toes when born with two left feet. On another note, I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the ride of your recent collaboration with Sandra Adams, 'Graveyard of poets'. So inspired by both. -Richard

Janice, The poem is about finding hope where there appears none. And seeking forgiveness for all those that I've wronged. I am sorry for the deeds and words that ever hurt. -Richard

Heidi, Thanks for the comments. Thanks for all of them throughout the days. I just read your Rhyme "Everything Good is Worth Restoring". Such a gifted poet's voice, a force to be reckoned and relished. And I do. -Richard
