The Tortured Mind

The tortured mind 'tis that causes pain Knowingly, to others with abandonment Sticking out its venomous tongue again, Dissing others, but to its own detriment. It cannot seem to grasp the simple truth The tortured mind 'tis that relishes pain, Twists words into what’s foul and uncouth Eschews responsibility, like clearly insane. Becoming harder and harder to explain Ranting and raving with vilest intent The tortured mind 'tis that releases pain, Until forcibly silenced it will not relent. Seeks new faces, new victims to assault But continues to sing an old, old refrain Dares never to admit its own arrant fault The tortured mind 'tis that pleasures pain.

I am still trying to visualize what a tortured mind could be, I always think tortured goes with a heart.

Hmmm...yes, that's true, but it also goes with mental conditions, I think.

"The tortured mind 'tis that pleasures pain." Thank you for this lesson, Milt. I weed them out as they tend to cling together. (Like minds)! Is the quote an original? I love it!

I suppose it is original; I don't think I recall reading it elsewhere, Anaya. I couldn't decide what adjectives to use for "pain," so I changed it with each stanza. Not entirely proper, I suppose. Just call me a renegade! (chuckling)

This tortured mind, so full of scorn Would have you think his way is best But when he sounds his dreadful horn, The exact opposite’s expressed.

Depraved and preying on others... that must be a terrible demon with which to live.
