For years I’d begged my parents for a puppy
Sam was a surprise gift for my ninth birthday
With his huge dark brown eyes and long waggy tail
I was just smitten
When I returned home from school, he’d fetch his lead
then wait patiently by the door to go out
I’d promised my parents I’d take him for walks
to the local park
That year we had such a glorious summer
We’d play outside all day in the bright sunshine
Autumn came, with drizzle and torrential rain
I hated those walks!
The reality of owning Sam hit home
In rainy weather we still had to go out
But I’d made a lifelong commitment to Sam
my four legged friend
