Notes About The Poem

Monoku Ekphrasis poetry contest Sponsored by Dilly Dally<3 Aug.2024

Marc Chagall artist " The Three Candles" 1938

This masterpiece was painted during the invasion and start of world War ll...Marc Chahall and family, at risk of capture and death camps, fled to France, and eventually to the United States.

This painting was done during this upheaval and struggle. We see the bride and groom, above the fray of Spiritual battle, angels and demons, and the groom protecting, and comforting the bride in his arms.

The focal point on the left is three large, lite Candles which, to me, is representative of the trinity... the Father, Son, and Holy Spirt.

The bride could also represent Israel, often called the bride of God and prophesied about in the book of Revelation.

The Three Candles

                      rise above
oh bride abide in arms of love--and trinity of light.

Well thank you! It's difficult to write in such few words and so deliver an emotional poem so I'm grateful you thought so! Xo
