The Things That Are Best
Diamond rings and silver beads
That glitter in the light,
What good are they to lonely souls
Through darkness of the night?
Long coats of fur, large shiny cars,
And chandeliers that gleam;
The joy of them is transient,
They are not what they seem.
Mega-mansions with velvet lawns
And servants to do the chores,
How quickly some become entrapped
By these superficial lures.
When will they come to realize
Possessions are not the key
To the tranquility they seek;
Are they much too blind to see?
Those on their roads to lifetime joys
Sometimes take a wrong turn,
Filling their lives with empty goals;
When will they someday learn?
When will they ever truly know
Happiness comes from inside;
Nothing man-made can ever match
The simple joys they hide.
The simple joys...a loving home
Where everyone shares good health;
Supports real love and fellowship;
This is the measure of wealth.
The simple joys of doing their best
Of using their talents so fine,
Achieving a goal that money can't buy,
These are the things that shine.
The simple joys of earthly gifts
Like watching a bird build his nest,
And walking with life on her natural path;
These are the things that are best.
