The Straw man

The Straw Man stopped by today
Listen to what he had to say
before blowing away
after this exposé

Aliens don’t do crop circles
or carve out landing strips
Only non-scarecrows have such ability
Ground crews do the Trojan work,
using string, planks of wood,
and sketchy blueprints
Heavy-duty equipment
is often required for the latter,
but not spaceships

As usual Ufologists and cults
are only too happy to jump on board
using the crappiest video recordings
as grainy evidence,
all enhanced by voiceovers
from know-all scarecrows that orbit the edges
of human gullibility and vulnerability —
ripe to be swayed either way

As for the heavens,
they never designed clarity on earth,
though they may provide
soul-searching clouds
that slowly unravel across the sky,
diluting everything
— even the water —
with bubbles of hope,
only to burst on the tines of pitchforks
misused by twisted hands

Such monsters
skulk in bedrooms and haylofts
after families in denial bail them out
They rarely take rain checks
unless kept in check
Though with hindsight,
it’s very poor foresight
to tempt them back downstairs
with a weapon as a birthday present

Many poets too lose rhyme and reason,
expressing reality as an
amputated tuning fork
whose stumps prevent them
ever facing the music
Others sense the blunt frequency
of straw beneath their feet
that will never soak up all the blood

And after spilling his guts,
the Straw Man added:
There’s still enough of me left
to return and break the back
of any new AI mirages.

Gotta love the straw man ( a scarecrow ). Created out of something real. So wonderful knowing this, especially with many fake things out there in the world. Congratulations David, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. ~ Brandy

Heya Brandy! Well spotted, he’s both a Straw Man and metaphoric Scarecrow, unfortunately created from real observation, the human world and especially the virtual world can be very difficult places to navigate, thank you for stopping by with congratulations, cheers David

Hello David, Congrats on POTD that crackled with DK's grit and wit. Your Straw Man’s voice had equal parts oracle and yes, prankster. Somehow to me it was satirical and strangely sacred. And that is what it takes to get POTD. Enjoy my friend. Autumn Blessings, David, Daniel

Heya Daniel! Probably somewhere in the middle of all the above you mentioned lies true reality, or more importantly the POTD algorithm, thanks so much for great comment, cheers David

I liked the scarecrow in Wizard of Oz the best, but enjoyed this one too... NO AI - I agree, we are meant to write from hearts, not from AI... God bless you and Congrats on POTD. Love, Gina

Thank you Gina, The Wizard of Oz scarecrow definitely had more humanity and character in him than AI could ever hope to replicate, I appreciate your blessings and congratulations, glad you enjoyed the read, cheers David

Heya Anne-Lise, yes the Straw Man is always reinventing himself trying to keep up with humanity, although I agree, can’t beat a good old scarecrow impaled on a spike in a field lol! Cheers David

Thank you Zyrool, so glad I managed to hold your interest in this piece, probably needs a few reads for the Straw Man to fully reveal himself, looking inward and outward at the same time, cheers David

If its said often enough people will believe anything, some believe that ET built the pyramids and not thousands of slaves.lol Interesting read David, congratulations to you on the honour of POTD. Hope you're keeping well. Tom

I’m plodding along Tom, trying to stay out of trouble, No easy task lol! I’m genuinely shocked this one received POTD, perhaps the dodgy Straw Man, has seen so much throughout human history, that his own complicity was recognised by the PS algorithm? Thanks so much for breaking the good news today, keep well, cheers David
