The Star of David

The Star of David I took a brisk hike on my street, To meet with a few neighbors and have eggnog and sumptuous treats. What lovely lights sparkled in wine country, everywhere! Santa on Porches, reindeer galore, Talking snowmen, said, "Hi, there!" Wreaths on household doors. I wrapped my wool scarf around my head.. Then I found something upon the street, that upon which,I almost tread. It was a red felt Star of David, lying on the street. Alone and cold, that starry night... right in front of my feet! I began to remember that Christ was a Jew. So were Mary and Joseph, and all the disciples, too. I tried to remain tranquil and ponder. Why these two great religions seem so distant. I simply hesistated and wondered, It seemed terribly sad to me. Because we all, indeed are family! And to me Christ is Jewish, Though many will get angry and call me stupid and foolish. When Jews got murdered as in New Jersey lately, Why all the hush to not see how hateful, I pray thee! I could not leave that lonely star there, so of course it came home with me. I put the Star of David in a frame in my home. I remembered the flames of the Holocaust. And though, Christmas for us is a time of peace The attacks on Israel and Jews, never cease. I was very fortunate to be raised by parents who were too busy to pay any attention to jews or Israelis or note any difference. If Daddy could have a steak he was happy (and he'd give half of it away) - or a glass of homemade egg nog. We all played together where I lived. Or if not, we didn't know it.

Hi and I appreciate your sharing your childhood experiences. Our parents leave an indelible Mark on us~what a great family you come from. In Chicago, as a young girl, we children all played together. No problem. But at country clubs was a signRESTRICTED...that meant no Jews or People of Color. That was long ago. I just did not understand why this was so at all.I did not like that idea...and I was probably only seven. Panagiota xx

My dearest Chaver, Gershon! I did not mean to make you cry but am glad I wrote a poem with some meaning as to reality. I get very upset with these murders. It seems "Never Forget" is meaningless. Israelis live under constant attack. The wealth of love and kindness from a Jewish friend Is a gift....and the contributions of Jews is undeniable in all fields. Now stop crying and sing Hava Nagila. Thank you again. Panagiota When I see my wooden Magen David in my kitchen,I will think of you and this poem! Shalom, Panagiota
