The Soup Bowl Shared
Poetry contests offer the inspiration frame,
so the poems can get a place in apt showcase.
It’s not to earn any literary accolade or fame,
for nobody here is running a poetic race.
The contest entry is the choice of will free,
as there’s limitless option to totally ignore,
avoid the same contest of high frequency,
follow other sponsors’ edict plenty in store.
Free from clasping chains of theme and form,
if the unbound muse is a bird of the open sky,
why cage it behind the bars of dictated norm,
on its carefree and cheerful wings let it fly.
Quick filling of a contest isn’t an anomaly,
but the manifestation of its popularity rare.
One sponsor can’t usurp the soup bowl as monopoly,
for many more appear around repeatedly to share.
