The Rock

I am the rock in the river. Ages have I been here, Ever watching the waters race by, To meet all the sooner, With their destiny. Ever do they push against me, Trying to force me from their path. Do the waters forget, That they uncovered me? Steadfast, I remain. Wars have come to me, With men fighting over scraps of soil, Hurling death at each other, To change their destinies. Often did they cling to me, Covering me with their blood. Do the men forget, That waters carved this land? Unconcerned, I remain. People visit the riverbank, Some swim in the water, Reveling in their strength, As they sun themselves on me. Later, they come to me, Older, with families of their own. Do the people forget, Time, like the river, races by? Still, I remain. Ages though have I been here, One day, the waters shall race on by, To meet all the sooner, With their destiny. For, one day I will be here no more. I, the rock in the river.
