The Pride of Summer Comes Before the Fall

The Fall is a time of deep reflection, one for a yearly self introspection. When we see the trees change their attire, from the shades of green to autumn fire. Each year we grow a little bit older, as the world becomes a little colder. To know we have come closer to our death, when a sigh is changed to a frosty breath. The pride of summer comes before the fall, when the lighter threads turn to woolen shawl. All of creation must accept this fate, and all must prepare when the time is late. Then warm in our beds we'll drift off to sleep, and a god that cares our spirit will keep! date:10/03/2019 contest:Autumn Sonnet sponsor:John Hamilton

Proverbs 16:18 declares, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Mr. Groen's poem is a searing reminder of the biblical wisdom which warns that "pride" is a precursor to unintended human suffering and humilliaton. The charm in this poem is that it cleverly uses the word "Fall" as a double entendre for "autumn" and a "fall from grace." There are many good aspects to this poem, but the coupling of definitions is succinct and demonstratively effective. I enjoyed it. Von

meru, This is a very nice and delicately woven poem. Let the eternal flame's fire remind us of a life so well deserved, though it may be our fate, and lasting plea. -Richard
