The Passover Section

With springtime now upon us, If your town has lots of Jews, The supermarket has some foods You might have need to use. For Passover’s approaching And the holiday demands No bread nor pasta be consumed; Thus, stores have made their plans. A special section’s filled with All the substitutes we need To serve at Seder time, just like The ancient texts decreed. There’s matzoh meal, gefilte fish And macaroons and cakes And all of the ingredients For anyone who bakes. This Passover array depends On neighborhood and store, So often pickings might be slim While other shops have more. For Jewish folk with markets With no matzoh, I’d behoove You to tell the owners how you feel Or do what I’d do - move!

Heh, heh, another cutie... Where I live, the sales are so good that gentiles swoop in on Saturdays and make off like bandits. Jumbo bottles of honey for $6.99. Five boxes of Matzo for $2.99. Kishke for $3.99 a roll. Used to be more of these specials, but times are hard for supermarkets. Happy Passover, gw

Your poems are always engaging Ilene, and from this one I learn. When younger my grandsons attended a Jewish school though this was not their faith, they loved it and learnt a lot and would greet me on the phone with "Shalom Grandma" There sweet little American accents greeting me this way was always a treat. Thank you for your informsative poem.

Dear Ilene, to the best of my knowledge, there was no corned beef eaten on the first Passover? It was lamb, bitter greens (no horse radish), unleavened bread, red wine, and no dessert. The modern seder is mostly tradition, much like Christmas is to most Christians. Right or wrong, enjoy your seder. / Maurice

I'm not Jewish but I am going to have a big dish of corned beef and cabbage:) Thanks for the smile, Ilene. You never disappoint.
