The New Christmas Season

Thanksgiving celebrations are complete; families recuperate from their meals; Black Friday tomorrow, cars line the street, and shoppers at Wal-Mart looking for deals. Neighborhoods adorned with bright colored lights; families decorate their Christmas tree. Everywhere you look you see festive sights; folks out and about all looking carefree. But there’s a disturbing trend going ‘round; Christmas is not politicly correct. Holiday season is the proper noun; ‘cause some are offended and will object. In our country today I have no doubt; we forgot what Christmas is all about.

John, my sentiment exactly. We were forbidden to wish others Merry Christmas in the workplace here in rural Georgia. This fell by the wayside when some of us more seasoned and stubborn Georgia Boys were determined to defy upper level management by loudly proclaiming Merry Christmas to all who passed our way. No, we didn't get fired nor disciplined. We did get a vote of thanks from fellow employees and soon you could hear Merry Christmas throughout the entire workplace. MERRY CHRISTMAS, JOHN

John, here out west, a lot of people say merry christmas to each other . It's only the businesses often saying "happy holidays" I don't care what they say. I just wish one of these businesses would give me a price break!! Very nicely done.

Here in Texas we have businesses saying "happy holidays" as well but schools no longer have a Christmas Holiday instead they have a "winter break." Some small towns that used to have a nativity scene on the town square no longer do it because some complain that they are offended. We had a suburb of Dallas start putting "In God We Trust" decals on their squad cars, boy did that cause a flap. Bottom line is - it's ok to be a believer, you just can't state it openly.

Hi John, I agree with your message. Christ should not be forgotten on Christmas because he is what that day is about. Excellent sonnet.May you and your loved ones have a Merry Christmas :-) Alexis

Loved your poem, and so correct. Most Christmas parties have the birthday guest missing. Let's put the Christ back into CHRISTmas. Away with political correctness, which is usually far from correct.

This is an awesome sonnet, John. I love the message here. Some traditions and beliefs need to remain for original intent. The rhymes in this sonnet are very well done, flows nicely. Great write!

You are so right, Jan, I am usually somewhat careful about what I say but when it comes to doing away with Christmas, I don’t give a damn if I offend them; I am going to say Merry Christmas!

A very sad truth addressed in this poem John. Well expressed!

Thank you, Heidi, it always makes me so angry when people who don’t believe in Christ tell me I shouldn’t say Merry Christmas.
