The Nativity Narrative
She was beautiful within and without,
He was handsome, there was no doubt,
Engaged to be married, they were in love,
He knew she was pure like a dove,
A shocking news - she was found carrying,
A public shame - 'twas worrying,
What could he do? He would put her away,
Silently without much delay,
That night, while he thought on these things, behold,
An angel of the Lord, he told,
"Joseph, thou son of David, do not fear
To take Mary as thy wife dear"
"What she's conceived is of the Holy Ghost,
She'll give birth to a son foremost,
Jesus will save the people from their sins",
Virgin birth fulfilment begins,
Joseph, the just man, rose up from his sleep,
He his wife decided to keep,
He did as the angel had bidden him,
They married, life was no more dim.
Caesar Augustus issued a decree,
All his people enrolled must be,
So all of them went, each one to his town,
And Joseph also travelled down,
From Nazareth to Bethlehem, he went,
For he was of David’s descent,
To be taxed with Mary, who was pregnant,
And while they were there, her infant
Boy was born, she wrapped Him in swaddling clothes,
Laid Him in a manger they chose.
And shepherds were watching their flock at night,
And lo, the Lord's glory shone bright,
An angel of the Lord stood by their side,
Frightening them, who watched wide-eyed,
And the angel said, "Do not be afraid,
Good tidings of great joy's conveyed,
For a Saviour is born for you today
In David's town, Christ, the Lord, yea!
This will be your sign, you'll find the babe wrapped
In swaddling clothes in manger kept."
And a multitude of the heav'nly host
Appeared, praising God, giving toast,
"Glory to God in the highest, and then,
On earth, peace, goodwill among men."
When the angels had gone, the shepherds said,
"Let's go to Bethlehem ahead
And see this thing, which the Lord has made known",
They came with haste to the place shown,
And found Mary, Joseph, and the baby
Lying in the manger to see.
And when they had seen him, they spread the word
About this child, which they had heard,
And all those who heard it marvelled at them,
But Mary, in her heart, kept them;
The shepherds returned, glorifying God,
And praising Him, for they were awed
At all the things, which they had heard and seen,
As was told them, the manger scene.
Thus, the story of the nativity
Is reason for festivity.
