("Depth Psychology Merit Badge, aka The Myth of Being", 2015, original oil) The Myth of Yesterday “Yesterday, today was tomorrow and tomorrow, today will be yesterday” So say the sages, and so say us, groping in the dark following the trailing sparks of fireflies dancing in the night. But the fact remains it’s all a myth, the myth of being and becoming, the myth of yesterday and tomorrow, the myth as a story we tell ourselves to make sense of it all. A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma told to the blind ones safe and sound within their cave. (2/15/24)

Seasons stay the same, while time moves through days, months, then years. Today is a gift, tomorrow unknown and yesterday is gone. So thankful to the Creator that created it all. Congratulations James, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. ~ Brandy

Lovely James. Humans assign "time" as a way to speak with one another and "...make sense of it all..." Congratulations on the honor of POTD! :)

Thank you everyone for the kind thoughts and words of encouragement! I'm surprised by the honor this poem receives - do they pick a poem-of-the-day out the hat at random? - yet nothing is random (I agree with you Tom Woody on that one), yet it remains a mystery... Cheers, and thanks again, James

While I don't agree with the sentiments expressed (I believe life has a God-given purpose and that it is knowable and within our reach) I can at least agree this makes for awesome poetry James. Enjoy your day in the light

Dearest James, I just had to reach out and express my utter awe for both your poem and your well-deserved achievement of POTD! The moment I read the title, I knew I was in for a amazing journey, and your words did not disappoint. The imagery of fireflies, fleeting and mesmerizing, perfectly captures the ever-elusive nature of "tomorrow." But what truly elevates your poem is its raw honesty. You don't shy away from the uncomfortable truth that much of our understanding of the world is a story we tell ourselves, a myth we create to find meaning in the grand unknown. The final lines, with their enigmatic reference to Plato's allegory of the cave, leave a lasting impression, urging us to question our perceived realities and seek deeper truths. It's a thought-provoking piece that will stay with me for a long time. Congratulations again on POTD, it's truly well-deserved! - Blessings Daniel

Many congratulations James for POTD. This is a very well written, reflective poem. Really makes you think. I always try to live in the ‘moment / the present’ but not always easy being a bit of a worrier! Great writing. Look forward to reading more of your work. Have a great weekend. :):)

Einstein himself said time is just a persistent stubborn illusion, nevertheless we do need time to compartmentalize our lives, and bring a sense of order to civilisation as we know it, cosmological spacetime is a whole different ball game, congratulations James on POTD cheers David
