When an owl with a scowl had his eyes on the prowl In search of a savoury bite A little brown mouse poked his nose from his house Unafraid as a full moon shone bright And the owl rocked his head till his night vision said, “My supper just came into sight.” But cicadas don’t sing when owls take to the wing So, in silence, the mouse stood to fight. A screech in the night as the owl got a fright And an end was put to his endeavours A most gruesome sight as the ground left and right Was carpeted with blooded feathers The mouse ate his fill of his ill fated kill Then dragged the remains to a warehouse The cats and the rats will be glad of the meal Supplied courtesy of the Weremouse

Terry, your poem is a deliciously dark twist on classic predator-prey tales! The rhyming scheme adds a playful melody to the gruesome encounter. I love the image of the "unafriad" mouse standing his ground under the full moon, hinting at his secret power. The surprise reveal of the "Weremouse" throws readers off balance, adding a layer of unexpected mythology. The final image of the shared feast among scavengers leaves a chilling yet satisfying punchline. - Daniel

Thanks Andrea. I saw the views building up, but the comments were a while in coming. I thought I’d missed the target and perhaps it was simply too Halloweeny. So I’m chuffed that yourself and a few others got the gag.

Thanks, Bill. I clearly remember the expression ‘Weremouse’ popping into my head, but I’m blowed if I can remember where I was or what inspired the notion. Glad you enjoyed. Terry

Thanks, Beryl. Glad you enjoyed. Bit of a David and Goliath theme going on, I think.

Thank you, Ilene. Might seem ill-timed with Halloween so far away but I wasn't gonna hang on to it for nine months ;-) Glad you enjoyed my little tale of ‘tables turned’. Terry

I ‘drew’ the picture fairly quickly and as a non-artist I thought it was half way okay. Glad you enjoyed it and the tale. Thanks, Paula
