The Moonrakers
Calming water and the moon shining
Rivers of rays on a lake flowing
A crippled water painting appears
Men become half dead from having beers
The molten gold became the night’s veil
Blinding them from the white sun so pale
Only found the moon’s phantom glowing
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
Enamoured by the lonely reflection
One of them made a proclamation
“There’s cheese white as starlight in the lake
No other people are here awake
Pillage the water and get that gem”
They grasped their rakes and raised them
Filled with craving and self-inflation
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
They shattered through the water in June
Making mountains, valleys and a dune
Making forests of dead twigs and leaves
As the men craved the cheese like thieves
A child’s voice called out to them saying
“The white cheese of night you are raking
Is a shining shadow of the moon”
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
“Who reigns over the stars of the night
Who rises and sets by his own might
Who is the spring of living waters
Who is the life of all astronomers
Who is the hope of righteous persons
Who lived through all the world’s generations
Who is the silver disk who gives light”
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
Anger filled the men who snarled and said
"If such a thing is above our head
Let it become visible to us"
The child came out of the shadows thus
Pointed his finger to it for their sake
Fury filled the men who raised each rake
So the boy walked back to his bed
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
The blind continued mining for cheese
The boy continued resting with ease
The moon was sad for the men’s blindness
“They came to the world with emptiness
And they will return to the earth empty
My soul appeared to them in pity
As a bright child from the dark trees”
Splashing water and the moon shining
Men mining for a phantom glowing
