The Modern Poets' Society

How different was the world of long ago when writing was a special skill to hone, and masters of this art were so well known with names like Wordsworth, Shelley, Frost or Poe. The realm of poetry began to grow exceedingly as newer forms were sown though now there are so few of world renown while poetry itself sees endless flow! The techno world allows us to be seen on countless websites and we all can claim to be a poet, but the irony is that there barely is a thing to glean from this, for often just to show one's name, the poet pays the publisher a fee! (A Miltonic Sonnet - I hope!) Written 4/30/14

There is much truth in this. Some of those very poets of renown would have trouble in our world with all of the good poets of today. Congratulations. Love, Joyce

Hi Andrea, Recently I reread Emily Bronte's poems and to think in those times women writers' had to assume a male persona so they could have any chance of being considered for publication. Your poem shows it is wise to look back now and again to see how far we have progressed. Before joining Poetry Soup I wrote for my own pleasure and was content to show them to my family. Now I have a worldwide audience. It does suffice, for now. This poem is a praiseworthy win. Congrats x

Boy isn't that the truth! I think the internet is wonderful for talented poets to have an audience which would otherwise be unrecognised. Great sonnet that blows mine away Andrea. But then again you are the Sonneteer! Hugs

I think we should all just go back to being traveling bards, spreading our poetry from town to town. If we are good people will feed us and give us a place to sleep. Wandering minstrels of the spoken word.

This is so true Andrea and the Publishers make all the money. Once The House Of London ask me to write a poem for them. Than they put it in this book That cost $69.00. The writers are the ones that do all the work and they get all the money. They said it would be sold in very expensive Hotels....Lucilla

Great job and so true no matter what it seems these days a poet cannot win without a price to be paid in the end back in the days of the giants they could make a living doing what they enjoyed but now their's a price tag attached. again great job expressing this my friend and fellow souper. cheri
