The Milkman
He came sharp at 6 a.m, he was our old milkman
My mother woke up to bring it in
She would sometimes meet him
Today was one such day
She greeted him, but he said nothing
and went on his way.
She found that odd, but put it down to
Him having not heard.
The doorbell rang around seven
It was the Milkman’s son
Who came to say his father had passed away.
My mother was in shock
The milkman had died at four a.m
She narrated the story to his son
She ran to the kitchen to see
The milk bottles were empty.
