What did the memo say? Did it regard an important policy and/or organizational objective or was it merely a middle manager's assertion of power and authority? And, in either case, was it sent to a group of employees or singularly to this person? Is the sacking of this employee an appropriate action, based on more than this singular event and, perhaps, also warranted by their performance or is it an ego-driven response from a desperately obsessed, over-achieving middle manager who has failed to assert his/herself to higher management, so must assert and 'inflict' his/her power and authority on subordinates...the 'little people' who do their bidding? Guess we'll never know, but all of us who have spent time in such an environment can relate, I'm sure.
