I did not come here to sprint.
I came to gather the pulse of the road,
to feel the gnaw of silence
against the bones of my resolve.

Each step is a revolution
against tiredness,
against the voices that murmur quit,
against the burden of what I once carried.

The horizon never hurries.
It waits, steady as a metronome,
marking time with the breath of dawn,
reminding me: endurance is a kind of prayer.

What is a marathon if not memory
unfolded across distance
the faces that hailed,
the hands that let go,
the griefs I refused to bury?

Still, I run.
Not because triumph is certain
but because the road demands witness.
Even the broke beg a compass.

I anchor my heart to the road,
woven mile after mile.
The finish is not some banner
it is the hour I see
fractures still hold weight.

And so I move,
one breath louder than surrender,
forty-two kilometers of fire
coursing through my veins.

If I falter, let it be forward.
If I fall, let it be on the line
where the road has already
turned me into flame.

"I anchor my heart to the road, woven mile after mile. The finish is not some banner it is the hour I see fractures still hold weight." I came back because I had to. Want you to know that those words (yes, I could have simply referred to # stanza but by typing them, I was able to have alone time with them) are KILLER as in how they hit me = ONE LIFE ASPECT POETICALLY SUMMED UP & DELIVERED What every poet has tried to say. Good night ... CayCay

Rowena, your inspirational poem highlights persistence: “endurance is a kind of prayer… the road demands witness… one breath louder than surrender…” and the last stanza, “If I fall, let it be on the line where the road has already turned me into flame.” Congratulations on your second place win on Mile 12 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 13 has already started.

You wrote about the contest! Such a novel idea, if we could turn back time and I had the only memory of today, I'd steal your idea. You are kicking some running butt and writing up a beautiful storm. Don't untie your poetic shoes because many eyes are on you. No pressure. Beautiful poem, beautiful you. Poetry hugs ... CayCay I CAME TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS

As a former runner - though not a marathoner - this really resonates. Thanks, Rowena.

this entire poem resonated with me, for I ran from age 48 to 68...some marathons, some 5Ks and some 10Ks I especially liked these lines: And so I move, one breath louder than surrender, forty-two kilometers of fire coursing through my veins. your poem spoke to the real meaning behind why I ran diligently every day for those 20 years....are you a runner?

I love running long distances, Rowena. I stopped racing at 50, but still ran for fun into my early 60's. That became long walks (2 or 3 hours) now at 80 I'm down to an hour or less at a time. Love the poem and use of metaphor, my friend. Bill
