The Indian Snake Charmer

I have seen them stand outside my door, pleading mother to help stage their show, on our verandah with stony floor, tattered clothes, hungry child, wife on tow! dusty robes speak of miles he walked, two woven baskets on wooden yoke, usual wares with which he embarked, a venomous trade to feed his folks! with widened eyes I saw him sit down, his sweat pouring down in summer heat, mopping face and brow with long sleeved gown, asks favour of water, food to eat! rested and nourished his show is on, a crowd of urchins get a free peep, melody like from an old car horn, he blows sharp and sweet but yet so deep. speckled cobra nearly five feet long, rocks in anger with an open hood, heat of summer is no time for song, disturbed from slumber, how very rude! As child was overawed by his skills, such deadly snakes controlled by his Been*, there is tragedy behind each thrill, truth of life, often hidden unseen! snake charmer’s life is twin tragedy, education denied from a child, for snake it is to be in custody, to lose their freedom to rule the wild! let’s solve this tale with education, help their children go to a good school, use their skills to help conservation, so the snakes roam free, the wild to rule!

I really like the poems, describing your childhood experiences in India. I don't think I ever had a chance to experience a snake-charmer there, and the tune he plays, but I have heard stories from my mother about Pythons roaming around in pineapple groves of a tea-garden where she grew up. Excellent poetry, Krish, superb rhyming too. Best wishes ~ Mala

Mala, thanks so much! Yes, I have seen snakes in sugarcane fields some 6 to 7 feet long! Cobras and Vipers. Snake charmers and many such street performers still exist! I have seen them in Delhi! Hopefully, Govt. can help them climb up the social ladder!

This is so good Krish, you have enlightened the reader to the reality of the Indian snake charmer, it’s a brutal existence for all involved, snake included, excellent poetry, a big contender in the real sense for the contest, cheers David

David Thanks and so delighted to have your kind words! Indeed, some are condemned to live their lives because the larger society doesn’t care. Thanks once again, my friend!

Hello Krish, all children should be in school. Working for the adults. With the virus going round, learning on the computer is for a while, so how long is a while? Some people can work from home. Yet not everyone can. Blessings my frind.

Hello Krish, oh! This makes sense tome. It is because the villagers are afraid of their children being sick. The virus will be better in the next six month?! Oh that would be a good thing to happen. I will. You do the same. Blessings my friend.
