The Holy City - New Jerusalem
The Holy City [New Jerusalem]
“10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” Rev 21:10-14 NIV
The Holy City comes down from heaven,
Shining brightly with God’s glory;
The brilliance of a precious jewel—
John’s Revelation vision and story.
The Holy City has a great high wall
And twelve gates attended by angels.
On the gates are familiar names
Of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Three gates are on the east,
And three gates to the north;
Another three on the west
And three more to the south.
The wall has twelve foundations
Named after the Apostles.
The city forms a square;
Each foundation made of precious jewels.
The first foundation is of jasper;
The second of cornflower blue sapphire;
The fourth vivid green emerald,
And nine other jewels for the foundations higher.
No doubt they match the precious jewels
Found on a priest’s ephod.
The twelve gates are twelve large pearls;
The city’s streets of pure transparent gold yet solid.
There’s no sign of a temple
Because the Almighty and the Lamb reign.
There’s no moon or sun to be found
For God’s glory does remain.
The nations will walk by His glory
And offer up their splendor.
The city’s gates are always open,
There’s no shame, deceit or armor.
The citizens of the Holy City
Were found in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
They’d trusted through earth’s trials;
Some persecution and strife.
They surrendered to their Creator
And beheld Him day by day.
Persevering to the finish line;
With the Lamb of God to always stay.
