The Happenstance

By happenstance, we lock our eyes
as I see her on the winding stairs
as whispers float around the room.
Well-known and beautiful, at that moment,
her dark brown eyes are fixed on me.

The smell of roses is wafting through the air,
and I take one, breathing in its scent-
          feeling flutters never known before.
My normal world appears so dark and dank
compared to this space where I am now.

This powerful attraction- is it truth or folly?
Perchance it is a dream- but as I daub
my cheek with dewy petals of the rose,
I know for sure a dream it's not- for now
she stands before me, our eyes still locked-

her hands accept my offered rose-
and I feel Cupid's arrow bind our hearts.

Congratulations on your second place! It is a lovely poem! I had this whole vision of her descending the spiral staircase! Beautiful things always happen when there is a spiral staircase in the vicinity. Lol! Enjoyed!
