The Gypsy Queen, Some Fairytale

Seeks beauty, a prince now age to marry
She in a fruit tree wants bread or fare thee
It happened again
another maiden
Although he had no bread for m’lady

Gypsy with cart, plan wins the maiden back
Witch hidden, with a hairpin she’ll attack
“a golden coin for that bread”
Mishaps all gone, and instead
Prince and maiden married and hit the sack

At times the prince sings happy at times not
King and gardener noticed, worry they ought
The gypsy’s daughter, the witch
hidden in the cart, would switch
The beautiful maiden she was they thought

The prince stumped, “Señora, how dark you've become!"
"The sun has burnt my skin," the witch answered numb
She'd stuck a pin in the hair
of the real maiden’s so fair,
turned into a dove, to the witch she’d succumb

A dove out of the azure sky, flew by
Asked the gardener if the prince was alright
The gardener then told the prince
An amigo ever since
The dove told the prince what happened that night

The prince fell for the little dove trade-in
Yet to discover the secret hairpin
Stroking her, she never fled
When felt the pin in her head
Jerked it out, the dove changed back, a maiden

The prince told the king of maiden's ill fate
The king heard both singing, became irate
The gypsy witch is a fake
and she’ll be burned at the stake!
So the prince married his maiden upgrade

~ and lived happily ever after amigos!

Dear Anaya. Thank you for entering the contest. This is a brilliant set of Limericks that deserved a much higher placement in the contest! Sadly, I asked for 1 limerick per story. I wish I hadn't set that as a criteria because you and about six others had entries so good they should have made first place positions. Only for fairness for those who did stick to that did your poem get an honourable mention. You've put so much thought and effort into this piece and I hope others see this too. Thank you for all that you've put into your work. Best wishes.

Dear Anaya, reads just like a folktale told around a fire, quick turns, sly humor, and that little shimmer of danger tucked under the rhyme. I like how the dove becomes the truth-teller, slipping in from the sky to undo the witch’s trick. The whole thing moves with that festival-day rhythm, light on its feet but carrying a real heartbeat underneath. Beautiful! Blessings, Daniel

Daniel, Ty! That is such a pleasant way to spend a night, I'm all in! I'm pleased that you caught the sly humor, the contest calls for it, it's what came out of my head, (lol). Trading in the witch for the real maiden in this case. The line "“Señora, how dark you have become!" straight from the tale, it brought laughter. It is more of a challenge using folktales unheard of. May blessings

Ty, Jay, I feel the same, it probably translates better in its language, I did the best with limited syllables! Whew

A narrative limerick based on a fairytale about a prince's quest for love and the overcoming of a witch's curse. So cleverly done. Best for a win.

Apt and admirable for Cinco De Mayo, although not familiar with this fairytale, a fine cultural ambassador. Mas!
