The Greiving
THE GRIEVING
For Eugene
It was stupid of him
To let it happen
If he could have known
had even a notion of it
he would not have agreed
for her to leave
would not have helped her
load the wagon.
He might have lain down
In front of the tires
Cut open his hands
And feet
Slit his chest
Perhaps showed her his heart
Dropped to his knees
And begged her
To stay.
And she would have then.
He might have said
Wait until winter passes
When the beds are not as lonely.
He might have said,
Look,
These are the plants we
Bought in our first year.
He might have said,
Tell me what part of you is restless
And I will sing to it
And she would have stayed.
