The Graying of a Hummingbird
They move in fast- dazzling with their beauty
and sunsplashed energy-
they are a complete mystery to us
we wait for them to tell us something
about ourselves
to tell us a secret about the universe
to take us to their bejeweled city
far away from the mundane.
but things rapidly change
turning back into something familiar to you..
all the while sucking you dry -
then leaving in a blur
without revealing much of anything
while you revealed everything to them.
You sit there stunned following their retreat
back to the edge of the horizon
until they look more like dragonfly than hummingbird
wondering if they were ever really there in the first place
maybe it wasn't a hummingbird after-all
maybe it was just a dragonfly..
pretending to be a hummingbird
We quietly hope that it will return someday
in that same spectacular bejeweled blast
and say something meaningful-wonderful-
healing-lasting
but it never returns...
relationships are alot like hummingbirds
