The Gracious

One little sunflower alone among many headless stems poses by my mailbox. Some summers ago, others flourished there, but were all mown down. If they can forgive their being slain, perhaps they will resurge and rejoin her. Today as I back my car out onto the street, I chance to glance over where that one new flower has remained, and I see, to my delight, that the lone sunflower has brilliantly turned into a small and gracious group of three! for the Encounters with Flowers Poetry contest

This form looks like a real challenge. Truly enjoyed the story, and the words are suited impeccably to the form as always. I like how it says "as I backed my car" instead of talking about something in the past. Makes it more alive. P.S. Have your read my Celena poems? I remember wanting to know what you thought of how I did with the really long narrative type.

I enjoyed this one Andrea, visualizing the three sisters standing together against metal of the mower!

This is wonderful! So descriptive, that one sunflower surrounded by remnants or maybe ghosts of other flowers. I think this should have won.

Very creative work for the contest..Reads like a winner to me..Some of them seem to survive despite what happens to try to snuff them out..Thanks for the honor of placing in your contest..I like the way snow and ice crackle when melting in the sun..I haven't heard that sound but a few time in my life for we don't get much snow and ice..Sara

I have had some bad luck with plants recently. I gave my zinnias too much plant food. My aloe vera plant is doing quite well. Nice tribute to Mother Nature. Good luck in the contest! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

As I recall, they did not grow more than that, but maybe I remember wrong. It happened a long time ago. This poem is from maybe ten years ago.

The shape of the poem rises to the sun and sinks to drink deeply of the hidden waters. A holy trinity!! Hey, where is the kimchee planted . . . in the backyard by the septic tank?
