The Girl With the Crooked Smile.

The girl with the crooked smile; I knew her for a short time; I was a boxer back then; sparring with shadows; Always up on my toes and dancing in circles. These days life is more like a rock skipping across a pond. Thrown by a lover hoping somehow she is being entertained; And where the stone finally ends up is anybody’s guess. Life—who knew huh? I never knew it could do what it did. I ventured many miles for so many years; hoping the day might come; It never did and that crooked smile has never been far from my mind.

Leonard, How true that "life is more like a rock skipping across a pond." Sometimes we put energy into ventures or relationships, and we never know whether it was time well spent. I hope you reunite with the girl with the "crooked smile." I look forward to reading more of your poetry. Excellent! Carolyn

Leonard, this is great. I think that they feel of the narrative, as a whole, has a lovely romanticism about it. For me, this is how ‘love poetry’ (sorry, I can’t think of a better description) should be written. Very few people can use the flowery images normally associated with the form and those that try end up sounding insincere. That said, it is not easy to use the everyday language and create an impact, but that is what you have done with this poem.
