The Field of My Dreams

The park was immense, its lilac-bush-lined fences remote To blast a home run took a superhuman smote All alone a-tremble at home plate, so helpless and small Dared I hope to swing, and not miss the ball... Decades later, the lilac bushes are grown thicker The once-cavernous park now shrunken, and quicker Than my shock at the passing of so many years The unraveling of stitches from my baseball-sized tears

Always an honor for me to garner a fave, especially from someone whose poetry I admire so much. Thank you, Kim... And, I'd like to note here that the idea for this poem came to me as I thought of the opening scene in John Knowles' novel, "A Separate Peace." My feeble efforts commenced from there. :) gw

Oh, I love this! My one childhood home had a huge woods in my backyard...looked much smaller when I returned and another there was a missing pond and broken up road. Great job on returning to the past in its sad state.

Thank you so much, Kim, for sharing your memories of the woods in your backyard. It can be so jarring when we see the 'giants' of our youth shrunken to normal size (or even less sometimes). Thank you for the view and the comment. Best wishes, Gershon

You have described the feeling we all have had when those silly adults are all screaming at us and we think we will die if we miss - especially if we miss three times. Nice one; great imagery.

Oh, those silly adults... Some of them ought to banned from kids' games forever, shouldn't they?! :) gw
