The Distant Call

For now, his feet stumbled, Clang! The gun fell out of his hands, He sat with a thud beside the brick wall, Waiting for the imminent relief, As he looked to the stars, The pain seemed to fade away, The memories of the village gushed in again, The jets' roar now seemed like a bird's chirp, As his fallen companions moaned, He heard the delightful giggles of his child, The Sergeant gave his orders to the chaos, But he heard his wife's loving call, The noise became a distant chatter, A babble, of cries with a sudden screech, He closed his eyes waiting to knock, Waiting to hear a creak, His hands on her hand, When he can rest and rest and rest.......
