In the pool's men’s locker room, three of us were changing after our therapeutic swims.  Almost in unison we grunted in pain from our various injuries.  I said, “At least we found relief in the water for a few minutes.”  My friend quips back, “Damn Gravity.”  It sparked a small flash of inspiration in me.  I thought briefly that I might be able to express poetically the blessing and the curse of our common master – gravity.

Here goes:

Master - gravity I’ve spent my life pushing against its pull. I’ve surrendered my body on the altar of its will. My god has rewarded me for both my pushing and my surrender. My body is weak and damaged, but my spirit is strong and free. My god is one true god, the god of us all. From it life has its rise and fall. Our god is most benevolent and equitable. Fight and resist as we may, we all obey its rule. Master - gravity
