Notes About The Poem

Author's Notes: This new couplet poem of mine, "The Circus Fat Man," is one that actually communicates to the reader on several different levels. From my perspective as the author of this particular poem, the metaphorical and symbolic nature of this theme delves into aspects of human nature, physical appearance, imagination, inspiration, and a reality, in the end, that defies the notion and bias of "first impressions" that many people may hold when they are thrust into witnessing a wondrous event in an unexpected circumstance and place. I shall leave it at that, and let, You -- "The Reader," make your own judgment at the end of this poem. "The Circus Fat Man" and his unusual story awaits you!! The Circus Fat Man

The Circus Fat Man

This unusual man is truly a real sight to see as
“The Circus Fat Man” for a local Cajun circus.

He takes a sense of definite pride in being known
by this distinctive moniker, while always smiling!

When talking to groups of circus attendees, at once,
he announces his title with a twinkle in both eyes!

He makes sure they know he’s a spokesman for his
circus and that he comes from LOOU-ZEE-ANNA!

Coming from the southern bayou region of this state,
he’s unbelievably known too as a “strong man” of sorts.

That’s really his true secret, which by his blubbered
appearance and presence doesn’t seem at all possible.

That is, until he starts lifting and curling a series of 
progressively back-breaking weights done by Olympians.

The Fat Man is known also for his unique ability to pull
immensely heavy Caterpillar equipment with no problem.

At the end of his circus introduction spiel, while always
smiling, he knows what the circus attendees want to see.

Moving with him to a very large open area, the circus 
attendees, with wide eyes, see the weighted objects he uses.

And don’t forget the Caterpillar equipment—it’s there too!
With bright lights blaring into the dark evening sky, all is ready!

As the Fat Man goes through his various demos, the crowd now
grows in size, truly mesmerized by the sight of his real muscles!  

As the weights increase and the difficulty of each demo multiplies,
the crowd both gasps and sighs as they witness each of his events!

For his final act, The Fat Man prepares to lift a weighted object
above his head that has never been attempted by anyone at all.

With a hushed silence, he starts his lift, whilst moaning and 
groaning at the truly immense weight of his chosen object.

Inch by inch, he lifts the impossible weight with his head now
tilted toward the vast infinity of the star-lit, deep-dark night sky.

The circus crowd gasps momentarily, and then is silent, as they
bear witness to this stupendously executed Herculean event.

The Fat Man now appears in a perfectly-flexed musculature as
the real Circus Strong Man that he truly is and has always been.

With the mesmerized circus crowd looking on with amazement,
The Fat Man, with legs locked, achieves his final lift sequence.

Holding his final lift for a period of very long seconds, he looks as
if he bears the whole weight of the world on his bulging shoulders,

as he looks intensely into the utter vastness of the deep-dark night
sky with the realization that he’s a true Olympian without any equal!
