The Black Panther

The black panther sensed its prey.
The hunt began as a graceful gazelle
Foolishly strayed in the moonless night.
With powerful strides soon, the powerful panther
Gained on its intended tasty prize.
It smelled the blood almost too soon,
The wound inflicted on its lacerated neck.
Soon, it would die…..

I woke.
Sweat covered my whole body and
I trembled with the chilly night air.
There was nothing to do but
Take a quick shower and change,
Wash my blood-stained teeth,
Throw my dirty night tracksuit
Into the washing machine and
Go back to sleep. A futile hope.

The bed sheet was wet with sweat.
I had to use the other side of the bed,
The part where my wife used to sleep.
A sudden cosy warmth girdled me entirely,
I smelled the musk of the odiferous larch,
I heard the swish swash of waves of a lake
And for the first time in many nights
I slept without being absorbed of ugly dreams.

What a nightmare it was Victor, I’m pleased you slept in peace on the other side of the sheet… Beryl

I know; when people marry, love for many years, their worlds are forever linked. One is never the same, fully alive again when the other passes. Blessings my friend.

Hello Victor, The panther’s hunt, the sweat-soaked waking, is like a dream too stark to forget, too layered to escape. You captured the terror of being hunted, not just by beasts, but by memory, grief, and the body’s own betrayals. You wrote a dream and you wrote a resurrection. Excellent! Autumn Blessings, Victor, Daniel

Victor, your creative mind dances at heights so lofty that from a troubling start, you have meandered through twists and turns, ultimately arriving at a resolution that brings peace. Outstanding piece of writing.

Dear Victor, how from a horrible nightmare, you shifted to peaceful sleep! Your imagination works at levels so high, that from an upsetting beginning, you have taken devious turns and finally came to a conclusion so soothing. Beautiful composition.

You took a long journey in one night. You have a lot of dreams, but your lucky enough to remember them. Perhaps dreams are where poems really are born. I'll try to dream tonight.

Particularly wonderful! I could feel this one, great imagery; and the moment of lying down on the wife’s side of the bed (a comfort that perhaps is not fiction at all). Black panther, graceful gazelle, moonless night, blood-stained teeth…fantastic! Fave
