Notes About The Poem

“Against entropy, the only antidote we have is attention
the act of choosing what we love and tending to it.”

- Maria Popova

------

“Order is a temporary state.
The universe is always moving toward greater disorder,
yet within that drift, islands of beauty emerge.”

- Brian Greene

==========

The Beauty of the Disequilibrium

I was born in a spoken Word
a universe of infinitesimally low entropy
energy and matter
pressed into order
incredibly dense
God breathed

Since that first compression
I have been sliding
toward indifference
toward equilibrium
and yet your existence remains
statistically staggering

You are temporary whirlpools
in my river of chaos
the bloom of a flower
the warmth of a coffee cup
the span of a human life
beautiful because they are
fleeting states
of disequilibrium

You live in the pinprick window
between my highly ordered beginning
and my ultimate stillness
the Heat Death
where every particle
surrenders
its last difference

You call it paradox
that life seems to break my rules
but life does not break
the Second Law
it discovers
the loophole within me
the narrow passage
between collapse
and creation

You intercept sunlight
like a waterwheel
catching a waterfall
performing thermodynamic work
building order
from my downhill slide

But there is no free lunch
to create a pristine room
you must sweat
breathe heavily
radiate heat
you make the room ordered
and the air around you
more disordered

Life does the same
on a grander scale
to keep your body
your brain
your memories
in a state of low entropy
you consume
transform
and return
chaos
back into the room

You pay me
an entropy tax
you become
a masterpiece of order
only because you turn
your surroundings
into a stadium of disorder
faster than they would decay
on their own

You are temporary
stardust
golden
brilliant knots
tied in my fraying rope
tight only because
energy continues
to pass through you

And still
after knowing
the fate of stars
after hearing
the silence waiting
at the edge of time
you plant gardens

This is an epic piece of the highest magnitude, Daniel. Words fail me as I come to terms with this profound philosophical work. Extremely imaginitive use of certain scientific concepts enhanced your approach without undermining its overarching thesis. I appreciate your comprehensive report on Skeleton. Your deep probe an accurate reflection of the poem’s essential motif. I enjoy excellent health and hopefully you do as well. The narrative is a sympathetic depiction of other people with that ailment. Best regards, Howard

ear Paige, Thank you for this generous reaction. Sometimes a single word like “WOW” carries all the energy a poet hopes for. I’m grateful the piece spoke to you in that way. Blessings, Daniel

One of the most beautiful poems about how life changes and how we drift apart-- it is in our nature. I think it is a great poem to speak to grief some suffer.

Hello Mike, Your insight is always appreciated. Yes, the poem leans into that quiet truth, how life changes, how we drift, how grief becomes part of the physics of being human. I’m grateful you felt the depth of it. Blessings, Daniel

This is a brilliant exposition of a great philosophical truth. From chaos and disorder, rhythm and alignment slowly evolved. It is not a static condition. From order it will again relapse into disorder. It is cyclic. But there is movement. This movement holds progress in its position. "You intercept sunlight like a waterwheel catching a waterfall performing thermodynamic work building order from my downhill slide". Love this stanza. Even after knowing that every star will burn out, we have to plant gardens so that in the midst of chaos, there will be islands of beauty and order. Wonderful thoughts, dear Daniel. Into my FAVE.

Dear Valsa, Your reflections are always a gift. You captured the heart of the poem, the cyclic dance between order and disorder, the way life builds beauty from the very slide toward entropy. I’m glad the waterwheel stanza resonated with you. Planting gardens despite the fate of stars feels like our most human act. Thank you for the fave and for reading with such philosophical clarity. Blessings, Daniel

Dearest Daniel, this is a brilliant philosophical poem. I wish I had written a masterpiece of philosophy like your poem. You are absolutely right, we are made of stardust. Life is mysterious but yet so clear. We must plant gardens even after knowing the fate of the stars. Your poem is a favourite for me. Thank you so much for writing this poem. Your poem gave me so much to think about. With love and respect always, Anne

Dear Anne, Your words mean so much. You always read with both intellect and heart, and I’m grateful you felt the philosophical thread running through this piece. Yes, we are stardust, and yet we choose to plant gardens, that mystery is the center of everything. Thank you for the fave and for your kindness. Blessings, Daniel

Dear Paula, Thank you for your enthusiasm. I’m glad the ending landed well for you. Life’s meaning is a question we keep circling, and maybe each poem is just another way of leaning toward an answer. Wishing you a beautiful week of writing. Blessings, Daniel
