The Beast (Part 1)

The Beast

Buried deep within my sadness
I forever grow more weary
and always more reluctant
to face another day.
In this hateful world I live in,
within the shadows lurking,
hurtful words are always waiting
to take my happiness away.

If I drop my guard and smile,
let a peaceful feeling fill me
or let a song of happiness
gently graze my heart,
the Beast, forever hopeful
of a chance to wreck It's havoc,
stealthily descends upon me
to tear my soul apart.

My laughter is offensive
to this evil thing that stalks me
and the fury It unleashes
grows with any joy I feel.
I have begged It to release me
from It's cruel, relentless clawing
but my plea's just make it stronger
and It scoffs at my appeal.

It hates my with a passion
and It seeks me with a vengeance.
It crushes and It smothers me
yet never lets me die.
For without me It's existence
would surely fade and wither.
It needs my tears for sustenance.
Forever, I must cry.

In the many battles
I have fought throughout my lifetime
old wounds are reopened
so that they may never heal.
Then with a twisted pleasure,
as the wickedness that taunts me
feeds upon my growing misery,
It tells me It's not real.

I am forever drowning
in this rising sea of sorrow.
What have I done to earn this,
what crime did I commit?
Never will there be an answer
to these questions, cried in anguish,
just a growing realization
only death will conquer It.

The beast is a powerful metaphor in this piece my dear. Love the flow from stanza to stanza and the journey of the soul. Brilliant way to display the heart.

Brilliant! Excellent flow and rhyming. I have been in dark places in my life, times of helplessness and hopelessness. I was last confined to a psychatric unit, struggling with anxiety and depression. My poem 'Visitor,' written on my discharge, is my thanks to God for pulling me through. He was the answer to my prayers, and now He is always with me. God bless, Keith

Actually life will conquer it. The anger and rage I feel have to be subdued when Icounsel kids. No one, repeat no one, deserves to feel this way. You can't change the past, but you can own your dreams and your future. Satchel Paige wrote a great book on growing up with the world against you., called "Never Look Back." Good advice from a great pitcher who couldn't play in the pros until he ws 50 just because he was black. An inspirational human being. Vince
