The Attic Treasure Trove
The Attic Treasure Trove
By Elton Camp
A collection decades in the making
To disturb them so unthinkable
The time came when it must be done
The father could no longer live alone
Though for himself and his daughter
Sorting through them was bitter-sweet
“Your mother packed these boxes,”
He recalled, with a catch in his voice
“I could never look at them before,
But now I guess there’s no choice.”
“Dad, I’d move back home if I could.
There’s Jim and the children,” she said
“No, it’s as it should be,” he replied
“This big house is way too much for me.
Nothing can take away my memories.”
To distract her, he held out a white book
“This is your baby record,” he explained
Birth weight, a pair of socks, her first word
All and more carefully recorded on its pages
Showed a child welcomed and well loved
Other boxes brought smiles to the two
Report cards, school awards, pictures
A stash of well-loved toys they found
Fond mementos of days forever gone
